Estranged Sibling Therapy

is a form of family therapy focused on helping siblings who have become emotionally distant, disconnected, or completely cut off from one another. Estrangement between siblings can stem from childhood rivalries, trauma, parental favoritism, abuse, inheritance disputes, or differences in values and life paths.

Goals of Estranged Sibling Therapy:

  • Rebuild trust and communication

  • Process past hurts or unresolved trauma

  • Understand each otherโ€™s perspectives without blame

  • Establish boundaries and healthier relational dynamics

  • Explore the possibility of reconnectionโ€”though not all cases end in reconciliation

What It Might Involve:

  • Individual and joint sessions to understand each sibling's emotional experience

  • Family systems approach to explore family patterns, roles, and influence of parents

  • Conflict resolution tools to improve communication and manage disagreements

  • Psychoeducation around trauma, attachment, and boundaries

  • Grief work, especially if one sibling doesnโ€™t want to reconcile

This therapy is particularly helpful for clients who feel stuck in emotional pain over the lost relationship, even if full reconciliation isnโ€™t possible. The ultimate focus is healingโ€”individually, or within the sibling bond.
